1st International Workshop on Relay Multi-Hop Communications in 5G Cellular Networks
In conjunction with The 10th International Conference on Wireless and Mobile Computing, Networking and Communications (WiMob 2014)
Welcome to the 1st International Workshop on Relay Multi-hop Communications in 5G Cellular Networks (ReMCell 2014), in conjunction with The 10th International Conference on Wireless and Mobile Computing, Networking and Communications (WiMob 2014), to be held in Larnaca, Cyprus, on 8-10th October 2014.
During the next years, the rapid increase in data-traffic consumption by cellular users will require to implement new connectivity architectures that guarantee acceptable levels of QoS and reliability. Multi-hop relaying in cellular networks, with and without the direct intervention of the infrastructure, faces the challenge of distributed management of communications, subject to mobility, in which end-user terminals will play a more active role in the self-configuration of the network. On the other hand, standardization consortiums like the Third Generation Partnership Project 3GPP on LTE, already in Release 12, are focusing now on relaying as a means to improve signal coverage, QoS performance and capacity in future releases of the standard. However, only static or semi-static relays are considered for the moment in the last Release. The full exploitation of multi-hop relaying in which also mobility is taken into account is whatsoever foreseen to take place in 5G cellular communications, according to the industry and the academia, hence the importance of this type of research.
