ANR-SNF project SUGAR: Surfaces, Geometry, and Algorithms

Duration

Starting date: April 1st, 2026
Ending date: March 30, 2030

Project Abstract

Surfaces are surprisingly ubiquitous mathematical objects, appearing in essential ways across a full spectrum of mathematics, from fundamental geometric questions, arising in the theory of Riemann surfaces, Teichmüller geometry, and dynamics, to more applied areas such as in the study of embedded graphs in computational geometry. As a result, in the past decades, distinct mathematical communities have worked on very similar problems without regular interactions, thereby missing opportunities for cross-disciplinary synergies and insights.

The objective of the project SUGAR (Surfaces, Geometry, and Algorithms) is to help bridge this gap by pooling the expertise of researchers in geometry, combinatorics, and algorithms, in order to make progress on key questions at the intersection of these areas. It is a spiritual successor of the ANR-FNR project SoS.
